This first mountain race of the season is organised by Pegasus Club on the craggy face of Binevenagh overlooking Lough Foyle. The race is a about 7.1 miles in length, just into the medium category with about 530 metres of climb. The start time is at 12 noon. The route is over a mixture of forest tracks, paths on the open hill side and grass and occasional patches of heather. Registration for the race is at the car park beside the church at map reference 678314. This is signposted off the minor road going round the base of the cliffs and forest (Ballycarton/Binevenagh) off the main A2 coast road.
The race starts inside the forest at 680310 on a forest path, climbs onto the open ground below the cliffs and does a loop over one of the landslip features. It then contours north east to enter the forest at 692315, climbs steeply above the cliffs to reach the lake at the top. After a fairly flat fast loop round the top the route returns down round the cliffs by the same path and finishes along fast tracks inside the forest.
This will provide you with a good opportunity to test your fitness prior to Gullion and our Br Championship race in April in an area most of you will be unfamiliar with. Of course the orienteers amongst you will be familiar with this area – you probably have a map which indicates that Steve Linton was one of the original surveyors in 1989.
The first running of this event was in 2005 with the record times being 58:51 (Gary Bailey) and 70:03 (Hannah Shields). Please give Pegasus your support and encouragement by entering the race and enjoying the craic.
