Slieve Foye Mountain Trial 13.0 10:00

)Slieve Foye Mountain Trial

(see below for 2010 updates)

The Slieve Foye Mountain Trial is held on the Cooley peninsula. If you are doing the Mountain Marathon this would be excellent preparation as the emphasis is on navigation choice over a longer distance in less familiar terrain. The staggered start will be from 10 am onwards.

The main route is about 13 miles with 4060 feet of climb, with a shorter option with less checkpoints offered  (but varies from year to year). Organised by Brian Vallely and Armagh Club, you are guaranteed a good event with social and crac afterwards.

Note that registration is at grid reference 123157.  To get to it take the road going very sharp right at Davy’s pub about four miles outside Newry towards Omeath.  Follow this road as it gradually climbs south east for three miles, winding round the mountainside to a cross roads where a lane goes left downhill.  This cross roads will be indicated by marker poles.  The venue is one third of a mile down this lane on the left.
Registration can also be reached by carrying further on the Newry – Carlingford road to Omeath, take the right turn at the main cross roads just before the garage, go up this road for about a mile, then take a right turn and then left at the tee junction.  The left turn down the minor lane is then almost a mile further on.

The race finish will be at this point but the start will be further along the Cooley peninsula (transport provided to car park on the east side of Carlingford Mountain at  168 137). .  Maps of the Cooley area are provided but you should expect to use a compass and carry wind proof gear etc as in other medium or long races.  Controls will be in more obvious locations than in previous years.

Amendmens to the above for 2010

The race will count towards the Grand Prix series.

i) There is only one category this year (16 km direct, perhaps 18.5 overall - a lot shorter than in previous years).

ii) The various control points must be visited in sequence.

iii) The area marked ///// is strictly out of bounds both for reasons of safety and also because it’s private property.

iv) The roads bordering this area are also out of bounds for  safety and also because this is a mountain navigational
      event not a road race.

v) Competitors in this event must wear or carry suitable gear for possible extreme conditions and also be self sufficient
    as regards emergency rations/water etc.

vi) A map will be supplied but competitors must supply their  own compass & whistle.

vii) Checkpoint 4 will have a cut off time to be decided on the  day.

viii) Competitors retiring from the event must report to the  finish or to the marshals at Checkpoint 4. Failure to do so
may result in disqualification from future events.
