Bearnagh Preview

This Saturday NIMRA are hosting the opening round of the 2003 British Fell Running Championships sponsored by Pete Bland Sports. The actual race is supported by Down District Council. Over a demanding Slieve Bearnagh course which takes in both Slieve Meelbeg & Meelmore.

With approximately 200 entries received to date, the race is building up to be the biggest mountain races in Ireland this year.

Last years British champion Simon Booth of Borrowdale will be hoping to start this years campaign where he left off last year but will be hard pushed by Rob Jebb of Bingley and Nick Sharp of Ambleside.

Former World Mountain Running Champion Angela Mudge (Carnethy) will start a strong favourite for the ladies race. Last years Joint British Champion Louise Sharp of Keswick will be hoping to make a good start in trying to win this years championship outright. Local interest lies with newcomer Sharon McBurney of Ballymena Runners.

One of the most interesting races of the day is the Men?s Vets race, with Mark Rigby (Ambleside), Mark Roberts (Borrowdale), Dave Neil (Staffs. Moorlands) and current World Master Champion Robbie Bryson (Newcastle) all entered.

The race starts from the Happy Valley, Trassey Track at 12 noon. Entries will be taken on the day up until 15 minutes before the start.
