Binnian Preview

Fri 25 April 2003 - Ian Taylor

Tonight we trek to the south side of the Mournes for the unique uphill only race "Binnian to the top". The starting point has been moved further round the mountain, in theory to reduce erosion problems but perhaps also to create a new record , different from Robbies unassailable 23 min 21 sec from Carrick Little. The start is about 1.4 miles along the Head Road from Carrick Little, at a cross roads. The route goes up the lane to a quarry and then beside a wall towards the top. Favourite must be Robbie Bryson if he runs, otherwise Deon and Neil have each a first and second place in the three races to date. In the ladies championship, Sharon McBurney is in a clear lead ahead of Alwynne Shannon. However both are on the NI team for Knockdhu on Saturday so the opportunity is there for Violet Linton to improve her points. Amongst the juniors Chris Bell (Abbey) will be favourite followed by Adam Mitten (Newcastle). However other juniors, such as Owen McMurray, could start making an impression as they gain experience.

With continuing record turn outs make sure you are there in good time for tonights race.
