Sharon and Neill are too hot to handle on Cushendall test

Wed 20 August 2003 - Simon Taylor

NEILL Carty and Sharon McBurney made all the running at the Lurig Challenge mountain run at Cushendall. There was a record entry of 90 runners for the three-and-a-half mile event which was part of the heart of the Glens festival.

Carty was soon out on his own as the runners climbed up out of the village and although he was well clear at the top of the 1200 foot climb, he continued to push the pace all the way to the line to clock the fastest time for seven years.
The North Belfast Harrier came home to the cheers of the large crowd in 27.min56 seconds and Andy Gregg of Larne AC took the runner up spot in 30.41, eight seconds ahead of Ballydrain Harrier David McNeilly.

Ballymena runners Mark Alexander and Alex Brennan were next with first junior Stephen McKeegan completing the top six, three seconds ahead of first veteran Jim Brown of BARF.

NI Champion Sharon McBurney followed up her excellent fifth in the recent Snowdon International with a record breaking performance.
The Ballymena runner clocked 36 minutes 56 seconds to knock almost half a minute off Roma McConvilles nine year old record with Ann McDowell taking runner up spot in 41.59, 12 seconds ahead of Martina Elliott.
