Irish Schools Championship

Thu 15 April 2004 - Ian Taylor

Congratulations to the athletes who travelled to the Irish Schools Mountain Running Championship held in Wicklow on Wednesday, 24 March.

In the Intermediate Boys category Shane Doherty had a tremendous (if rather brief) run to finish first in 11:58 15 seconds ahead of the second place in a field of 57 runners. He was backed up by five BRA athletes of whom the first was Scott Todd in 15th place.

In the junior girls Kristian McCloy was 8th out of 53 while in the senior boys her brother Jonathan was 9th out of 20. In this category the leading N Ireland participant was Edward Cooke of BRA in 5th place, followed by his team mate Eoin Carlton in 7th place. Indeed BRA had 7 athletes in this event, taking the silver medal in the team award.

The overall event was a great success with over 260 young athletes involved, a tribute to the work that IMRA has done in building it up over the years. Each province is supposed to have their own Championship with the better runners then taking part in the Irish Championships. However we have not been able to date to get an Ulster Schools Mountain Running Championship so interested schools were encouraged to send athletes direct to the Irish finals.
