Race Over The Glens

Jarlath Falls and Sharon McBurney were the winners of the ?2004 Race Over The Glens?, promoted by Ballymena Runners at Glenariff Forest Park yesterday. There was a big entry of 177 runners for the traditional New Year?s Day race and Falls of Ballymena and Antrim AC was an impressive winner of the tough 5.5 mile circuit of the Glen, which involved one thousand feet of climb, in 34 minutes 16 seconds. He finished 68 seconds ahead of recent Comber winner Simon Taylor of Abbey AC with Scottish based Dermot McGonigle of Newcastle AC third a further 22 seconds back.

Andy Gregg of Larne AC was fourth as Alex Brennan and Mark Alexander completed the top six and lead Ballymena Runners to victory in the team race ahead of Larne AC and East Antrim Harriers. McGonigle was the top over 40, with Peter O?Hara (Armagh AC), Ray Curran (Ballymena Runners), Desi McHenry (Willowfield), John Donaghan and Ken Hawtin (North Down AC) winning the over 45 to over 65 veteran categories.

Sharon McBurney, Northern Ireland Champion at both Mountain Running and 10km Road race, dominated the ladies race from the start as she clocked 39.19. Triathlete Heather Wilson was runner up in 41.49 with top veteran Anne Sandford third in 44.10, as Ballymena Runners completed a double by winning the ladies team race.
