Congratulations

Thu 9 June 2005 - Ian Taylor

Irish European Trial
Congratulations to NI runners who took part in the European Trial on Carrauntoohil last Sunday. The selected team includes
Brian Ervine
Kerry Harty
Cathy McCourt
Anne Sandford
Richard Rodgers is the team manager. The European Championship race itself is in Austria on 10th July.

In the overall race for which this was an uphill only section, John Lenihan just managed to win by 3 seconds in 80:28 with Des Woods 5th, Neil Carty 6th and Eddie Hanna 7th. Anne Sandford was second female finisher.

The previous weekend a large group of 13 NI athletes, mostly from Larne and BARF, went by sundry means, including a speedboat, to Jura. With very severe weather the bad weather route was used. First back was former Br Champion Ian Holmes in 2:56:03 with long distance specialist Mark Hartell second. First NI runner was Dan Spencer in 19th place in 3:32:44 followed by Jim Brown in 41st place in 3:49:20. Next runners were Corey Urwin, Peter Howie, Mark McManus (all equal on 52 place)and Vincent McAlinden.

Readers should note a new threat to Billy Magees easy victories in the vet 60 category. At Jura he was 146th, 11 places behind Denis Rankin the youngest vet60 in the race - indeed running to celebrate his birthday. Congratulations Denis - but we suspect you might have more trouble beating Billy over the next Hill & Dale race
