European Championship

Fri 8 July 2005 - Ian Taylor

This weekend the European Mountain Running Championship is being held in Austria, in the village of Heiligenblut, under the shadow of the Gross Glockner, the highest mountain in Austria.  An all-Ireland team is competing, with the ladies being represented by Hill & Dale Champion Kerry Harty and NI Championship leader Anne Sandford, both Newcastle AC and Cathy McCourt of City of Derry with Dublin?s Jane Cahill.  The uphill only course is over 6 miles with 3,500 feet of climb.  The mens team includes Brian Ervine of Ballydrain along with John Heneghan (Pudsey & Bramley AC), Dublin?s George Lonergan and Sean O?Heigeartaigh (Rathfarnham Ajax).  The mens uphill course is over  9 miles with 4,500 feet of climb.  Richard Rodgers is the team manager.  The race is noted for starting at 1250 metres in altitude with the finish at 2370 metres so some athletes may be a little unacustomed to the height.

Earlier on Saturday of the weekend the
6th Grossglockner mountain race is being held over the same course as the mens Championship, with hundreds of athletes competing and some even aiming to show that they should be on their team for the Championship races.  Both Richard Rodgers (team manager) and Simon Taylor (relaxing after graduation) are in the race and no doubt will be keeping an eye on each other.  Alert readers will be aware that at the Hill & Dale Donard race Richard was ahead of Simon on the descent but lost his way in the forest, leaving Simon to take fourth place.
