McKibbin sparkles at Glens festival

Tue 16 August 2005 - Simon Taylor

Alan McKibbin and Alwynne Shannon of Newcastle AC dominated the Lurig Challenge run at the Heart of the Glens Festival in Cushendall this afternoon.

Hill and Dale champion McKibbin was making his debut in the three and a half mile event and he blasted off from the start in his characteristic front running style, determined to add to his eight victories already this season.

Clubmate Deon McNeilly got back on terms after a mile but McKibbin really powered up the steep 1200 foot climb to reach the sum-mit with a commanding lead.

Ladies Winner There was no stopping McKibbin as he scorched down the mountainside to come home to the cheers of the large crowd in the very fast time of 27 minutes 53 seconds.

McNeilly was a clear second in 29.36 and he was followed home by two more Mourne runners, Gary Bailey of Annalong and Newcastles Steven Cunningham.

Jim Brown of BARF was fifth and first over 45 with Larnes ACs Mark McManus completing the top six.

Slieve Donard winner Alwynne Shannon was in fine form after racing in the Austrian Alps last week as she notched up a comfortable win in 36.53 over two minutes clear of local runner Ann McDowell, with Joanne Thinn of BARF third in 43.04.
