Snowdon Race Results
Thu 4 August 2005 - Ian Taylor
Congratulations to the NI team at The Snowdon Home International at the end of July.
A great performance was put in by Eddie Hanna, especially on the climb,
to finish in 24th overall and 16th international in a time of
1:15:45. Eddies climb took 48:27 but he paid for it a bit on the
descent with 27:15 - there were 14 athletes faster than this behind
Eddie.
The overall winner was Tim Davies in 1:06:37 in first place at the
summit and with fastest descent time of 22:59, beating even the descent
time, 23:17 of previous winner Ian Holmes
Second team member was Des Woods in 1:16:10 (27th), improving with
every race this year. He finished less than half a minute behind
Eddie but was gaining with his descent in 26:20. Third was Gary
Bailey (39th), less suited to the smooth running of Snowdon compared to
the roughness of Flagstaff but nevertheless not far behind with a
descent of 26:29 and 1:18:59 overall. Steve Cunningham had been
recovering from various bugs so was unable to demonstrate his full
potential, finishing in 64th place overall and a time of 1:24:09.
New team member Clare McKenna finished 6th female international in
1:38:56. Her climbing, in 1:05:32, was not quite as strong as
Alwynnes 1:04:43, but she made up 1:26 on the descent, passing Alwynne
on the way. The latter has perhaps not built up endurance for
longer events after being off earlier in the season and finished in
1:39:32. The third team member, Anne Sandford, did not do justice
to her recent performances with a time of 1:48:00, perhaps suffering
from races in the European Championship earlier in July and
Donard-Commedagh the previous weekend.
We should also congratulate Richard Rodgers on an excellent result in
31st place overall, in 1:16:54 - almost four minutes faster than last
year but not quite his best ever. Nevertheless he did manage to
finish 3rd in the vet 40 category, after Mark Roberts and Mark
Croasdale, with about 110 vet40s behind him.
