Weekend Round Up

Tue 1 February 2005 - Ian Taylor

Congratulations to Kerry Harty. Fresh from representing Northern Ireland at the Cardiff Reebok cross-country, Kerry won the Bangor Intermediate Ladies cross-country event on Saturday. Finishing in a time of 16:20 she was also ahead of veteran race winner Karen Marshall and under 20 winner Judi Graham (all in the same race).

Not content with running on Saturday for Newcastle, she competed in the Irish University Championships on Sunday in the Wicklow mountains. Running for University of Ulster, she won the Ladies race outright as well as the university title with a time of 55:22 and 19th place overall. Congratulations too to her mentor, Richard Rodgers who was fourth in Sundays race, following his fourth place in Saturdays veteran Championship.

Also starring in the veteran Championship were Deon McNeilly in second place and Dessi McHenry in second vet55 position. Newcastle were 6th team overall.

In the Ladies race, winner Kerry was followed by World Trophy member Cathy McCourt, a rapidly improving Hannah Shields, Martina Hawkins, Martina Elliot, Hazel McCausland, Anne Sandford and Claire Galbraith. Lets hope these performances are carried through to the fell running season.

In the junior Championship Alan McKibbin was unable to repeat his third place of 2004. However he led home the Newcastle team in 4th place, supported by brother Dave, and Eddie Hanna amongst others. Mark Alexander was first Ballymena finisher while Andy Gregg led home the Larne contingent. Junior runners Jonathan McCloy and Jamie Stewart were in 50th and 51st positions.
