British Championship Update

Tue 26 June 2007 - Ian Taylor

Fiona Maxwell fifth in Welsh race.
Fiona Maxwell of Mourne Runners extended her lead in the over 40 category at the fourth round of the British Championship in North Wales on Sunday.  Maxwell retained her All Ireland title last week and she produced another great performance at the Carneddau race to win the over 40 category and finish 5th overall.  Maxwell clocked 2.07.59 for the tough 10 mile route which involved 4,200 feet climb and despite a slight route finding error and a fall, finished just 66 seconds off the runner position.

Newcastle AC?s Alwynne Shannon also continued her good form after winning the Hill & Dale Series and finishing runner up in the All Ireland this month.  In Wales she consolidated her position in the British Championship by finishing 3rd over 40 in 2.16.56 and now lies third in the over 40 category with two rounds to go.

Former British over 50 Champion Jim Patterson of Mourne Runners clocked 2.11.40 for 5th in a closely contested over 60 category. Conditions were far from ideal on the two 3,000 feet high Carnedd peaks in Snowdonia with mist and rain making the rocky terrain treacherous.

The next British Championship round is the 15 mile Angus Munro race in the Scottish highlands in mid July, but before that Maxwell and Shannon will be representing Ireland at the European Mountain Running Championships in the Pyrenees on 8 July.
