Carnethy Five update

Wed 21 February 2007 - Ian Taylor

Report added, supplied by Tish McCann

Two Ni ladies were amongst the prize winners in this years Carnethy 5. Fiona Maxwell placed 2nd F40 and 7th lady, while Alwynne Shannon finished 3rd lady vet 40.

Earlier in the day the combined charms of the girls persuaded the organisers to accept a ?new ad hoc? NI girls team, thus allowing the two girls from Mourne runners and the two from Newcastle ac to form a temp. alliance and to compete as one team ?Slieve Donard Ladies?. The girls then finished as 4th ladies team.

  <>
The ladies were accompanied by 10 members of Larne ac, as well as Bill Maxwell and Phil McCann from Mourne runners.  <>

In near perfect conditions a record number of 484 started the race, which began with a long steady climb, the weather made for some fast running and the descents and tracks were often real battle grounds as folk fought for position. The final haul up to the top of Carnethy was torturous with two false summits masking the extent of the climb. Then it was down a heather filled hillside to the finish.  <>

The race organisers supplied tea and biscuits at the finish, laid on buses to the nearby leisure centre for showers and a hot meal before the prize giving.  <>

All in all  the Carnethy 5 makes for a  fantastic start to the season and with travel to Edinburgh so cheap and easy I would urge people to add this race to next years ?must do? events.

In glorious sunshine last weekend the Carnethy Five classic hill race had a record 484 finishers including 16 Northern Ireland visitors (including Billy Magee). The winners were Rob Jebb of Bingley in 47:59 and Angela Mudge of organising club Carnethy in 56:09 (and 25th place overall). First NI finisher was Mark McManus of Larne in 60:44 (62nd place) with our first female finisher being Fiona Maxwell (back home?) in 65:49 and 126th place. Fiona was 9th female and second vet 40. A total of ten Larne athletes took part with the A team in 11th place and the B team 28th. The four female NI athletes ran as Slieve Donard Ladies and finished as 4th female team and first female vet team.
