Commonwealth Mountain Running Championships

Sat 19 May 2007 - Simon Taylor

Keswick is set to host the first Mountain Running Commonwealth Championships in Kewsick in 2009.

From BBC Sport...

Great Britain is to stage the first Commonwealth ultra-distance and mountain running championships in 2009.

The event is the first step towards the sports push to be included on the athletics programme at the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships.

The four-event competition in Keswick will comprise a 100km road race, a 24-hour race and two mountain races.

"This is a big step towards being recognised at worldwide championships," Great Britain coach Norman Wilson said.

"The good news is Britain has a lot of talented athletes coming through."

The championships will be open to men and women from all 71 Commonwealth nations.

If the event is a success it is hoped the sport will be included at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Its obvious from the time of this news item that some people don work as hard as they might on a Friday afternoon!

The mountain races will be an up & down race and an uphill only one, with the courses between 7 km and 11 km long.  The event will be held in early spring or autumn to ensure there is plenty of accommodation in Keswick and will run from a Thursday arrival through Friday uphill race, Sunday up & down and Monday departure.  Five nights accommodation is provided.  The documentation implies a team event, for both men and women but there is no information on the size of the teams.  Keep training!
