Flagstaff Race
Fri 29 June 2007 - Ian Taylor
The fourth round of the NI Championship takes place this Sunday over
the Flagstaff to Carlingford route. The race starts at 11 am but
registration is from 10 am onwards in Carlingford, with a bus to the
start at about 10:30. As the race is a long category event you
should come with appropriate gear, map and compass. The weather
forecast suggests heavy showers and cloud so be prepared to use what
you carry!
Current records are held by Deon McNeilly (1:27:25) and Shileen OKane
(2:02:04) but no one has been near these times recently. In the
very poor visibility of 2006 only local runners Kris Muldoon & Don
Travers were under 2 hours.
After three events leading championship contenders are Deon McNeilly
& Des Woods, equal on 297 points, followed by Neil Carty in 295
points, Steve Cunningham & Richard Cowan. Fiona Maxwell has
maximum points in the ladies, followed by Alwynne Shannon (297) &
Stephanie Hambling. With many athletes recovering from Br
Championship events or resting prior to the European Championships, the
competition is wide open & provides a good opportunity to pick up
points. The event is also 8th in the Grand Prix series with three
more races in August & September.
Full race & route details are available from the "next race" box on the web pages.
