Slieve Gallion

Fri 28 September 2007 - Ian Taylor

The Slieve Gallion race takes place this Saturday, 29 September - the last local mountain race of the season. Ably organised by Mid-Ulster club, primarily by Hugh & Jonathan McCloy, you will be made very welcome. The race details of location etc are as on the web although the date there refers to 2006 rather than this year. The main race is over course I as on the web, length 4.3 miles with 370 metres of climb. A shorter junior event is also available, with the same start but turning left at the top of the steep climb to return down the zig zags to the finish.

The open race last year was won by the English team manager, Bashir Hussain, in 34:07 a full three minutes ahead of anyone else. The fastest time before that, over the longer course starting from the bottom of the forest track, was Brian Ervine in 38:10 in 2003. Alwynne Shannon was the quickest lady last year, in a time of 43:02.

Please give the event your support - as indicated above the last local race until the Turkey Trot on Boxing Day. Of course many of you are off the following weekend, either to the Br & Irish Junior Championship in south Wales or to the final race of the Br Championship series in Yorkshire.
