Thu 24 May 2007 - Ian Taylor
Congratulations to NIMRA members Hannah Shields and Nigel Hart on successfully reaching the top of Everest within the last few days.
Hannah climbed with a Russian expedition and summitted on 19th May with 12 others from her group. Her route was from the north via Tibet and follows a previous attempt in 2003 when she had to turn back 100 metres below the summit. Hannah, a dentist and member of City of Derry, has run in mountain and cross country events, completed the Connamara Ultra Marathon in 2006 and is an experienced arctic traveller.
Nigel summitted this morning, 23rd May at 6:30 am Nepal time with 15 others on the Caudwell Xtreme Everest Team, climbing from the south Nepalese side.. Nigel was on the expedition as both climber and research doctor, with the expedition examining human responses to extreme environments. This even included experiments on the South Col and some measurements on the summit of Everest. Nigel is a member and former chairman of BARF, running occasionally in Hill & Dale races and is a clinical researcher in public health.. He climbed another of the top Himalayan peaks above 8000 metres, Cho Oyo in 2005.
