Report from Brian Ervine:
Fiona Maxwell of Mourne Runners produced superb run to finish fourth in
the second race of the British Mountain Running Championship in
Snowdonia. Fiona is the current British over 40 Champion but is
in such great form she was in close contention for overall honours in
the top class womens race.
The 8 mile Moel Eilio race climbed 4 peaks with a total ascent of 3000
feet and former World Champion Angela Mudge of Scotland led a spree of
record breaking as the first four women all dipped under the 12 year
old course record. Maxwell got into second place with a flying
descent from the final peak but 2006 British Champion Natalie White and
GB International Olivia Walwyn snatched second and third on the long
run in to the finish. The Mourne Runner had a convincing win in
the over 40 age group but with a second place at Mourne Peaks last
month and 4th at Moel Eilio, Maxwell is well placed in the overall
rankings with four races in
the Championship to go.
Des Woods was well up in the mens race in 21st and 6th over 40 and he
was backed up by Mourne Runners Gary Bailey 45th, Brian Ervine 70th,
Bill Maxwell 115th and Jim Patterson 135th and 7th over 60.
The next British Championship race is at Durisdeer in the Scottish
Borders over a 10 mile course in 4 weeks time. The third race of
the Northern Ireland Championship is at Donard - Commedagh next
Saturday 24 May starting at 11 am from Donard Park, Newcastle.
