
Donard Uphill Race

Next Saturday, 19th July sees the next Championship race over an uphill
only course from Donard Park, Newcastle. Leading contenders from
four events in the Championship are Deon McNeilly on 396 points, Gary
Bailey with 390 & Eddie Hanna with 386. However Des Woods
with maximum points of 300 from three events, together with his current
form, must start favourite. Amongst the ladies Fiona
Maxwell is in a similar position to Des, with 300 points from
three events, compared to nominal leader Alwynne Shannon with 395
points.
The races start at about 12 noon, with route information elsewhere on
this site. The race is also the Trial for the NI team for the
World Trophy next September in Switzerland on 14 September. The
first three eligible finishers in the mens race will be offered places
on the team, with the remaining three places allocated by the Selection
Committee. One of these discretionary places has already been
offered to Steve Duncan (Omagh). In the senior ladies race four
are to be selected, with the first two eligible finishers offered
places and the other two places are discretionary.
In the junior teams, the first two places are offered to the first two
finishers in the trial races. However if the standard is not
sufficiently high, not all places will necessarily be filled.
Juniors should be aged 16, 17, 18 or 19 on 31st December 2008.
Juniors will have a further representative opportunity later in the
year when under 16 & under 18 teams are selected for the Br &
Irish juniors in Scotland on 12 October.
