Donard Uphill Race

Sun 13 July 2008 - Ian Taylor

Next Saturday, 19th July sees the next Championship race over an uphill only course from Donard Park, Newcastle.  Leading contenders from four events in the Championship are Deon McNeilly on 396 points, Gary Bailey with 390 & Eddie Hanna with 386.  However Des Woods with maximum points of 300 from three events, together with his current form, must start favourite.  Amongst the ladies Fiona Maxwell  is in a similar position to Des, with 300 points from three events, compared to nominal leader Alwynne Shannon with 395 points.

The races start at about 12 noon, with route information elsewhere on this site.  The race is also the Trial for the NI team for the World Trophy next September in Switzerland on 14 September.  The first three eligible finishers in the mens race will be offered places on the team, with the remaining three places allocated by the Selection Committee.  One of these discretionary places has already been offered to Steve Duncan (Omagh).  In the senior ladies race four are to be selected, with the first two eligible finishers offered places and the other two places are discretionary.

In the junior teams, the first two places are offered to the first two finishers in the trial races.  However if the standard is not sufficiently high, not all places will necessarily be filled.  Juniors should be aged 16, 17, 18 or 19 on 31st December 2008.  Juniors will have a further representative opportunity later in the year when under 16 & under 18 teams are selected for the Br & Irish juniors in Scotland on 12 October.

If you are a contender for a team place, please ensure that you have paid your ?12 (senior) or ?6 (junior)  NIMRA membership fee.  A copy of the form is on this site - use the fee rate quoted here, not those on the form.
