Scrabo
You are reminded that Scrabo Hill Race takes place this evening over
the new course starting at the Golf Club car park. Like the
recent Lurig race, it provides a chance for road runners to mix it
with more specialist hill runners. Last year the first four
finishers, led by Paul Pollock, were more normally seen on the road or
track - can the mountain men grab the title back?
Equally important the race is one in the junior Championship series,
with under 20 athletes running in the senior race and under 14, 16
& 18 in a shorter one. The latter event will be the basis of
selection for the NI team taking part in the British & Irish Junior
Championsahips taking place in Scotland on 11th/12th October. So
if you missed your chance to get on our World Trophy team, heres your
opportunity to get representative honours. The first two places
in under 16 & under 18 will be selected for teams with the
remaining places discretionary. Under 14s will be considered for
individual non-team places. However not all eligible places will
necessarily be filled.
The final junior Championship race will be at Slieve Gallion on 27 September.
Slieve Bearnagh
The final senior Championship event takes place this Saturday over
the short Slieve Bearnagh course - see the web calendar for route
details. Note that the race start time is 11 am and not as in the
printed calendar.
While the race is only over 4 miles, it involves three climbs, one
being steeply up Bearnagh. Currently the Mournes are streaming
with water so descents, especially off Meelbeg, are likely to be quite
slippery - bring your newest fell shoes!
Current records are
41.16 Rob Hope
(2006)
47.57 Angela Mudge (2003)
The above were set when the race was used as a British Championship counter.
