Irish University Championships

Mon 17 March 2008 - Ian Taylor

Congratulations to Ciaran Collins, winner of the mens race in the Irish University Mountain Championships, held in Crone Wood, yesterday. Not only was Ciaran first in the university event, he was first overall in a field of 91 athletes in a time of 28:14. A great supportive performance was provided by Jason Wilson, also running for the University of Ulster, in 31:59, 8th place in the university event and 18th overall. A Queens team, lead by Jonathan McCloy, had planned to go but their transport arrangements fell through and they were unable to travel.

The ladiesuniversity championship was won by newcomer, Orla Ni Mhuircheartaigh in 32:27, first female and 22nd overall, beating two Irish Workld Trophy members in the process.

The next event in the IMRA races is the Wicklow Way Trail on 12th April. So if you have recovered from the Mourne Peaks, this is an opportunity to do a longer faster event - either 13.7 miles or 27.6 miles - the shorter race particularly suitable if you are doing the Three Peaks a fortnight later and the longer one if you are building up to a big event in the summer.
