Mourne Mountain Marathon

Nearly five hundred competitors will be taking part in the annual Mourne Mountain Marathon this weekend.? The day navigation and endurance event for teams of two takes place over two days and involves an overnight camp in the mountains. Competitors must be self sufficient carrying equipment and food for the duration.
The competition is divided into four classes with the premier class, the Eilte Class covering a gruelling distance of around 40 miles over the two days. Cross channel mountain marathon specialists Tim Higginbottom and Chris Near will be favourites for the Elite title. The local challenge is headed by Deon McNeilly and Eamon McCrickard of Newcastle AC, Billy Reed and Gerry Kingston and Mourne Runners Gary and Clive Bailey. The event is sponsored by Lowe Alpine Equipment and Jackson Sports, Belfast and a large number of competitors are from outside Northern Ireland.
