World Trophy Report

Stephen Duncan and Shalene Ward were the leading Northern Ireland
performers at the World Mountain Running Championships at Crans Montana
in the Swiss Alps at the weekend. The 14 strong NI squad were competing
against athletes from 34 nations in the 24rd World Championship and
recorded good senior team placings.

Duncan was second Irish finisher in 96th place in the 8 mile senior
men?s race which involved a climb of 3,300 feet. He was well back up by
Neil Carty (105th), competing in his 17th consecutive World
Championship, Des Woods (115th), Edward Hanna (131th), Andrew
Niblock(134th) and David O?Flaherty(141st). Ward, competing in her
first world event, lead the womens team home in 62nd place, with Alwynne
Shannon (68th), Fiona Maxwell (72nd)and Angela Speight (88th). Jason
Wilson was the leading junior man in 63rd place over the 5 mile course
with 2400 feet climb.

The NI Senior men?s team were 21st , the Senior women 16th, the junior
men 15th. Jonathan Wyatt of New Zealand took the men?s individual title
for the 6th time and Italy secured the team title while Austria?s
Andrea Mayer secured her second World title with Norway taking the team
title.
