Thu 2 September 2010 - Ian Taylor
This weekend the Slive Foye navigation event is on, starting from 10 am in the Carlingford area.
If you are doing the Mountain Marathon this would be excellent preparation as the emphasis is on navigation choice over a longer distance in less familiar terrain.
Note that registration is at grid reference 123157. To get to it take the road going very sharp right at Davy’s pub about four miles outside Newry towards Omeath. Follow this road as it gradually climbs south east for three miles, winding round the mountainside to a cross roads where a lane goes left downhill. This cross roads will be indicated by marker poles. The venue is one third of a mile down this lane on the left.
Transport will be available to take you to the race start further along the Cooley peninsula. The route is approximately 16 km but you can travel over a longer route to avaid some climbing or if you go off course. The finish is at registration, where tea and coffee will be available. There will be a timed cutoff where the route crosses the Windy Gap road.
As already indicated on the race information page, the event will count towards Grand Prix points, in place of the Mountain Navigation event cancelled earlier in the year.
As required for all medium 7 long races, you need to carry windproof gear, whistle, compass & map, but the latter is supplied.
It would be helpful to have an indication of numbers beforehand - please contact Dennis Kerr (Armagh) on
