Snowdon International Race 2024 Report

The team selected for the event was Ashley Crutchley (Newcastle AC), Tom Crudgington (Newcastle AC), Keith Johnston (Armagh AC), Joshua McAtee (Mourne Runners), Diane Wilson (Dromore AC), Tanya Cumming (Newcastle AC), Catriona Edington (Annadale Striders) & Naomi McCurry (Glens Runners).

Arriving in Llanberis the day before the race, the team were greeted with sunshine and great visibility on the mountain. However, on race day they were given the opposite. Clouds had moved in overnight meaning the visibility up the mountain was greatly reduced. This coupled with the rain that started just after the runners began their ascent, was only going to make an already technical course even more challenging.

In the Men’s Team, Tom led the ascent strongly, summiting in 47:50 with Ashley (50:43), Keith (52:24) and Joshua (53:17) not far behind. This order changed during the descent, as Ashley had overtaken Tom by the midway checkpoint with Keith also moving up the order at the final checkpoint before the road section. Ashley was the first home in 1:16:40 (and also the first u23 runner home!), followed by Keith (1:19:46), Tom (1:21:28) and Josh (1:22:16).

Tanya was the first of the NI ladies to the summit in a time of 1:02:11 with Catriona not far behind at 1:02:35, followed by Naomi at 1:05:39 and Diane at 1:06:37. This order would remain until the finish with Tanya crossing the line in 1:35:32, Catriona in 1:36:05, Naomi in 1:39:31 and Diane in 1:40:44.

The event was won by England’s Joe Steward in 1:05:41, with the women’s race being won by Scotland’s Naomi Lang in 1:15:48.
