Note re Selection.
Athletes (with one exception) were selected at the trial held on the 18th August at the Scrabo Race.
Rather than send a development team from one age group that has occurred previously, after looking at the times in the race, the selectors decided there would be more value in selecting the three athletes chosen to run as individuals.
The rational used – As development athletes, they need to be competitive in the event to gain experience for their future development. Two of the athletes chosen, missed out on selection by less than 30 seconds, thus showing potential to ‘mix it’ in the event.
The third athlete suffered a minor injury in the days prior to the trial but was able to demonstrate ‘Hill’ results that were comparable with athletes selected.
As selectors, we believe these three athletes can run competitively in the event, helping them develop their ability for possible future selection.
When compared to the benefit of sending a full team at any age group, the benefits in this approach were deemed greater. The three athletes are all relatively new to Mountain Running and have not previously gained selection to International Competition.
We wish them and the four teams the best of luck for the event.
