Denis Rankin
It is with regret that we announce the death of Denis Rankin at the Hill and Dale Moughanmore race, 16th May. Denis took ill during the race and very sadly, despite the best efforts of fellow competitors (of which two were doctors), passed away.
Denis was a legend – climber, athlete, fell runner, skier, in short an all round mountaineer. In 1982 he completed the Bob Graham round of 42 Lake District peaks and 70+ miles in under 24 hours and more recently ticked off ascents of all the Scottish Munros. In 1979 as a founder member and first secretary he was one of a small group who began mountain running events in Northern Ireland. Denis organised the Annalong Horseshoe race for many years and then devoted his abilities to making the Mourne Mountain Marathon a must do event.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are extended to his wife Madeleine, his daughters and the wider family circle. A memorial service will take place this Monday, 20th May at 2 pm in Windsor Presbyterian Church (on the lower end of the Lisburn Road).
The family wish to express their thanks to all who assisted Denis on Thursday evening, especially the doctors, Mountain Rescue, fellow competitors and other support services.
